Την 21η Μαΐου ομάδες αλεξιπτωτιστών που είχαν εισχωρήσει στην πόλη, οχυρώθηκαν στο κτήριο του Οικονομικού Συσσιτίου (Κοινωνικός Χώρος Ιδρυμάτων Καλοκαιρινού σήμερα) και στην παρακείμενη οικία Κωνσταντινίδη (στη θέση της σήμερα βρίσκεται άλλο κτήριο), κοντά στον ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου. Έλληνες στρατιώτες και εθελοντές συγκεντρώθηκαν και τους κύκλωσαν, μετατρέποντας την περιοχή σε πεδίο μάχης.

«Μπαίνοντας στο ξενοδοχείο ΜΙΝΩΣ, συναντώ το γνωστό μου ναυτικό πράχτορα Παν. Κρουστανόπουλο, που κατέβαινε κείνη την ώρα τις σκάλες, και μου λέει πως είδε πάνω στη στέγη του σε μικρή απόσταση τριόροφου σπιτιού Κωνσταντινίδη, δίπλα στην εκκλησία του Αγίου Δημητρίου, πολλούς Γερμανούς να μάχονται προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις. Τρέχω αμέσως στο ξενοδοχείο ΓΑΛΛΙΑ, παίρνω μαζί μου το Δεκανέα με τέσσερις στρατιώτες και το ένα οπλοπολυβόλο και βγαίνω με την ομάδα αυτή στη ταράτσα του ΜΙΝΩΣ. Τους δείχνω το στόχο και τους δίνω εντολή να πυροβολούν συνεχώς, ώστε να μην αφήνουν τους γερμανούς να σηκώνουν κεφάλι και να μη εγκαταλείψουν τη θέση αυτή χωρίς διαταγή…

Με τους υπόλοιπους άνδρες που μου έμειναν, μπήκα στο διπλανό δρομάκι, που δεν είχε πλάτος περισσότερο από ένα μέτρο, και βγήκα στην οδό Βύρωνος. Έστριψα δεξιά στην οδό Λαχανά, όπου στη συμβολή της με την οδό Θαλήτα, βρήκα σκόρπιους ένοπλους που δεν ήξεραν τι να κάνουν. Τους είπα να με περιμένουν εκεί και συνέχισα το δρόμο μου μέχρι το τέρμα της οδού Λαχανά, όπου και βρέθηκα απέναντι ακριβώς στη σιδερένια καγκελόπορτα της κύριας εισόδου του Οικονομικού Σισιτίου. Με πέτρες φτιάξαμε ένα πρόχειρο πολυβολείο, απ’ όπου ο Στρωμαθιάς με το οπλοπολυβόλο του άρχισε να γαζώνει την πρόσοψη του Οικονομικού Σισσιτίου. Έτσι κυκλώσαμε τους γερμανούς και από τα δυτικά».

On 21st May, groups of paratroopers that had penetrated the city took up position in the Charity Kitchen building (now the Kalokerinos Foundation Social Space) and the adjacent Konstantinidis residence (on a site now occupied by another building), near the church of Agios Dimitrios. Greek soldiers and volunteers gathered and surrounded them, turning the area into a battlefield.

“On entering the MINOS Hotel I met Panos Kroustanopoulos, a shipping agent I knew, who was coming down the stairs just then. He told me that he had seen lots of Germans fighting in all directions on the roof of Konstantinidis’ house nearby, a three-storey building next to the church of Agios Dimitrios. I raced straight to the GALLIA Hotel, took my corporal with four soldiers and one of the submachine guns with me and went onto the roof of the MINOS Hotel with this group. I showed them the target and gave them orders to fire non-stop, so as to give the Germans no respite, and not to abandon this position unless ordered to…

“With the rest of the men left to me I went down the adjoining alleyway, no more than a metre wide, and came out onto Vyronos Street. I turned left into Lachana Street, where at the junction with Thalita Street I found a scattering of armed men who didn’t know what to do. I told them to wait for me there and headed on down to the end of Lachana Street, where I found myself right opposite the iron gate at the main entrance to the Charity Kitchen. Using rocks we put together a makeshift machine gun post, from where Stromathias began to rake the façade of the Charity Kitchen with the submachine gun. That way we hemmed in the Germans on the west, too.”
